DESCRIPTION: EPW - Moritz Grossmann, Glashütte, rare half-quarter-hour (eighth-hour, or 7.5 minute) repeater, 52mm, 18K gold original M. Grossmann HC with magnificent black armorial crest to its front, black enamel "A W" initials to its rear, signed gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-pin-set, lever escapement, likely 16J, gilt mvt, s#6145. Gross weight of assembled watch 75.0 dwt (116.6 g). A very rare watch, our consignor was informed in correspondence with Grossmann that they were aware of the current existence of seven examples of repeating Grossmann watches in museum and private collections, all of which were half-quarter-hour repeaters. The present example was not known among these examples and would be an eighth. This present example is highlighted by its beautifully enameled case, with the front bearing a baronial crest for the Wolfsramsdorf family which are, per Wikipedia, an old Vogtland-Meissen and Thuringian noble family with descendants listed as far back as the 10th century, members of nobility listed as far back as the 13th century, and an uninterrupted family line known from the 15th century. In all, a terrific piece for the collector of rare and unusual German watches.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function, repeat tone is somewhat muted and with audible rattle, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, gilt surfaces with some typical micro-fine scratches and pinpoint surface nicks, some of the visible screw heads with marring of their slots; dial with light hl between center and 1, light hl above seconds-register, some tiny nicks to rim of seconds-register hole, few scattered pinpoint surface nicks and mild micro-fine scratches elsewhere; excellent hands, some oxide and finish loss to tip of minute; case shows very little wear, ding to rear between center-left side of "A" initial and adjacent position of "W" initial, ding to left perimeter of rear adjacent to repeat slide, front enamel detail is fully intact, rear enamel detail is nearly fully intact with tiny bit of enamel loss to "W" initial at area of rear ding, small bit of enamel loss to decorative element below initials; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $6000 - $10000
